About St Matthew Lutheran Preschool

St. Matthew Lutheran Preschool has adopted "One In Christ," published by Concordia Publishing House, providing hands-on learning for even the youngest of God’s children. From songs to Bible stories to playtime, children will learn about Jesus and grow in their understanding of God and His Word. Teachers plan activities based on child-focused interests while providing skills necessary for kindergarten readiness. The variety of methods presented benefits many different styles of learners.

Our Goals in Child Development

Social, Emotional, and Spiritual 

  • Become aware of God's presence in our world

  • Learn of God's love for us

  • Learn to love God and others

  • Develop a positive self-image

  • Develop independence and self-confidence

  • Follow rules and routines

  • Make friends and know what it means to be part of a group

Cognitive

  • Develop thinking skills such as ability to solve problems

  • Learn how to ask questions that facilitate learning

  • Think through task logically

  • Following directions

Math and Science

  • Introduce mathematical concepts such as sorting, classifying, comparing, counting, making patterns, and measurements

  • Develop and use scientific reasoning and problem-solving skills

Communication, Language and Literacy

  • Use words to communicate with other, increasing each child's vocabulary

  • Develop skills in listening and appropriate ways to participate in conversations with others

  • Understand the purpose of print, recognize letters and words, and begin writing with a purpose.

Physical Development, Health and Safety

  • Develop large muscle skills - balancing, running, jumping, throwing, and catching

  • Develop small muscle skills to do task like buttoning, stringing beads, cutting, drawing and writing

  • Learn to care for the body, including healthy eating habits, importance of exercise and daily habits

Creative Arts

  • Experience and enjoy art, music, and rhythm

  • Understand how they can use these gifts to declare the wonders of God

Dramatic Play

  • Interacting with classmates, developing social awareness as they play

  • During the preschool years, a child's work is play. 

  • Play is an integral part of children's development.
